Maintaining motivation through a long project
February 28th, 2010 by Elliot ReeveAt Bytewire we are often faced with long projects which are developed over many months, sometimes even years in the case of our biggest project Street Crime and it can often be demoralising to continue to work on the same project over such a long period of time. There can be times when you feel the project is not moving along as well as you would like or you are stuck in a bit of a rut.
Below are a few hints and tips in ways in which we stay focused on our goal when working on a large project, hopefully some of you will find the ideas useful and perhaps even implement them into your projects.
Brainstorming
Yes, we still use old fashioned brainstorming, its a superb way to drum up some new ideas and start a roller coaster of improvements and changes which will make the overall project a better one. Sometimes on web development projects its not always possible to get everyone together in the same room, fear not, there are plenty of excellent tools which allow you to brainstorm without being together.
The main one we use here at Bytewire is Etherpad. Etherpad is a totally free real time text editor owned by Google. Its allows several people to simultaneously edit a document at the same time therefore allowing people to develop ideas started by someone else.
Time out
Believe it or not a large proportion of ideas are thought of away from your working environment, when your slaving away to meet deadlines and your heads in the game your unlikely to come up with inspiration for new ideas. Take some time out and take a step back from the project and take a look at it from the outside in.
Take some time away from the project to relax as a group of developers, you may well just come up with that idea which makes or breaks the project, it may not seem like “work” but as long as its not done too often it always helps motivation.
Progress
If your struggling to get over the line for that final big push spend a couple of hours looking at the progress you have made so far, as you progress the inspiration for what you have done so far will spur you on to finish the project.
Ask a friend
Friends are always there to help you, call on a friend who has no connection to the project. Either ask them for their thoughts on the project without going into too much detail to feed off any ideas they may have or chill out and relax to re charge yourself for another push at coming up with the best result possible for the project.
We use a combination of these techniques at Bytewire as we are often zoned in on a large project which can take a long time to develop. Street Crime has been in constant development for more than 2 years now and we are striving to make it the best we possibly can.
If anyone else has any techniques they use to stay motivated throughout a long project perhaps you can comment and share your ideas so that other people can benefit from what you have found works for you.

Street Crime Gangster Game – Balancing and Kill Fixes
February 25th, 2009 by Dave HewardOver the last week or so we have been watching over street crime and noticed a huge overload of bullets in the system.
This is mainly due to a small drop in players and the city bullet factories producing far too many bullets per day for the amount of players that they serve. The consequence of which has meant that players have managed to get there hands on large amounts of bullets relatively easily.
So as of just now, the city bullet factories will produce only 500 bullets an hour. For the same amount of lead and cash as before. We hope by doing this it will provide more competition for bullets and thus more enjoyment for you guys.
We have also lowered the amount that personal bullet factories make to reflect the following:
Small : 100 bullets
Medium : 150 bullets
Large : 200 bullets
Huge : 300 bullets
Hourly, providing you have 100,000 cash and 100kg of lead and that you have turned your factories production on at the inventory page.
We have also fixed some bugs in kill which had been leading to some minor problems with crew leaders and crews not dropping. This has now been rectified.
Stay tuned to find out more about new moderators, editors and helpdesk members shortly.

Street Crime menu revamp and feature rename
February 5th, 2009 by Dave HewardToday we made some slight changes to the menu and adjusted a few features.
Property has been renamed as Real Estate.
We revamped and renamed the selling and buying of credits and as of tommorow morning non paying accounts will be able to buy credits to make themselves a member from other players. This can be done using the credit auctions page, found under the Investment menu tab.
Importantly we have re-jigged the menu and because of this a few of the features names have changed they are listed below:-
Property became Real Estate
Personal became My Account
Users online became Gangsters Online
Player ideas became Idea Box
And we also ordered the menu around slightly differently into a layout which we think is slight better for the game.
We hope you agree.
Thanks

Street Crime: Testaments & Player Ideas
February 4th, 2009 by Elliot ReeveNEW FEATURES
Today we have added some new features to Street Crime,
Testament
This new feature allows you to designate a character to receive some of your items which before you would not have received back when you die.
By setting a player as your testament this player will receive 40% of the money in your bank and all of your vehicles in your garage.
You can only set a Testament if your a paying member and this can be done at your Personal page under the ‘Main’ tab.
Perhaps this will ease the pain of having your brains blown out?
Player Ideas
As part of our continued dedication to you as the players we have decided to make a full idea making and voting area. This can be found under the communications tab at the bottom. Or here Ideas page.
Here you can view and create ideas for street crime. You can also now vote for ideas that you really like, if a idea is feasible and is supported by a large amount of players it will be implemented.
You will only be able to create a new idea once every 24 hours and vote once on each idea.
We have also made some other small tweaks around the place.
Thanks
