Bytewire release version 4 of website

Preview - Bytewire release version 4 of website

Over the last 6 months or so we’ve been working on and off on the 4th iteration of Bytewires new site. After some considerable time, tinkering and optimising we’ve happily launched. Version 4 (v4) is our most ambitious yet, and was mostly the product of early mornings and late nights, when we found time to juggle it between our growing client commitments. Version 4 is the 4th redesign our site has had in just under 4 years, at the bottom of this post you’ll find some links to our old sites for comparison purposes.

We wanted to make the new site eye catching, simple, informative and accessible, but importantly, convey our message, that, great design and great business can be coupled together on the web. We have also made a shift towards mostly focusing on web design and development for small business in Essex.

Challenges

During the design process an important focus area was to keep the colour scheme of Bytewire but attempt to make readability as good as we could. We know for you purists out there that dark background with white text is not a preferable combination, but, such is life when your company color scheme is dark. This may be something that we offer a split test for in the future, just out of curiosity to see if people really do prefer reading off a white background.

Another challenge was that, as a company we offer a complete package, from hosting & domain management to marketing and e-marketing campaigns. This means we offer quite a few different services and it makes conveying our services quite challenging, as their are quite a few different services offered individually from start to finish. It was a challenge to try and get the services condensed enough so that it makes for easy reading, and we’re not wholly sure we’ve managed to nail that 100% just yet. It will be one of our main focuses going forward with the new site, as to make it easier for our clients and our potential clients to understand what we can do for them.

Special Thanks

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank all involved with making the initial release of this v4 possible. In particular we’d like to thank Adam Taylor, Elizabeth Elcoate for her expertise in design, Dee Goldstraw for her copyright services and all our friends and family that have contributed to helping us with their opinions and helpful insights.

For those interested, v4 is running on a WordPress 3.1 install and backed by a cloud server running PHP 5.3.2 & MySQL database, running on a custom build of Apache. Bytewire is a custom theme in WordPress and just goes to show what can be achieved with a WordPress theme given the skill of the developers, it also shows the maturing platform is capable of responsibly handling demanding small business websites (just like ours). WordPress is blessed with millions of available plugins created by some fantastic folks, and we make use of some in our very own site, most notably caching plugins and SEO plugins.

We’d love to hear your thoughts

We’re still ironing out a few small issues, but in the most part we’re really happy with the new site, but we’d love to hear what our clients and our friends think. So if you’ve got any comments or ideas of how we can improve it, please, please, drop us a little comment below. We’d appreciate it, alot.

We keep all of our old versions of Bytewire available, we find it quite cool to show people the transitions websites can make over time, and that just as your companies grows and evolves, quite often your website should grow and evolve with it. Take a peak at our 2 previous versions and check out the transition.
